The Part of the Bible They Don't Put on Coffee Mugs
It's all very inspiring until you get to the part where everyone cries in the wilderness.
I love a good Bible verse on a coffee mug. "She is clothed with strength and dignity." "I can do all things through Christ." "Be still and know." Beautiful. Inspiring. Perfect for a Monday morning.
But here's the thing about the Bible: it's a whole book. And some of it is not mug-ready.
Job, for instance. Job is not a mug. Job is a man who lost everything and then sat in ashes and argued with God for thirty-seven chapters. That's not a mug. That's a therapy session.
Or Lamentations. The whole book is called Lamentations. It's right there in the title. "How deserted lies the city." Not a mug.
I think we do ourselves a disservice when we only engage with the highlight reel of Scripture. The messy parts — the crying in the wilderness, the "my God, my God, why have you forsaken me" parts — those are in there for a reason.
Because sometimes life is not a mug. Sometimes life is Lamentations. And it helps to know that God is in those chapters too.
